About Dundee
The University of Dundee sits in the heart of the historic city of Dundee on the banks of the River Tay in north east Scotland. From mountains and lochs in the west to miles of coastline in the east, the city is surrounded by magnificent Scottish scenery.
Dundee is known as 'The City of Discovery', named after the Scott of the Antarctic's ship 'Discovery' which was built in Dundee and now sits as the centrepiece of a multimedia heritage centre, Discovery Quay, on the city's waterfront.
Its history of invention and innovation make Dundee a fitting place for an aspirational University. Dundee inventions include:
- the first telephone service in the world outside London
- the first street lights
- the postage stamp
- the submarine telephone cable, and
- the hole-in-the-wall cash dispenser
Though small enough not to be overwhelming or impersonal, the city is large enough to support a wide variety of cultural and leisure activities from theatre and the arts to hill-walking and water rafting.
The main University campus enjoys an unrivalled location within the city's cultural quarter, which is home to cafes, galleries, pubs and gift shops.
